OpenAi is at it again: Things are Messy over There
Security concerns, financial motivation concerns from former, and current employees.
Sam Altman’s week, and now month with OpenAI is worth gossiping about and things aren’t looking too good. Daniel Kokotajlo a former researcher for the AI guru said on an email announcing his resignation "The world isn’t ready, and we aren’t ready," and he added "I’m concerned we are rushing forward regardless and rationalizing our actions".
Complaints suggest that safety is only part of the equation but not the main priority
In 2019, the company transitioned from a nonprofit dedicated to promoting safe technology to a "capped profit" organization valued at $86 billion. Now, Altman is contemplating transforming it into a traditional for-profit entity, embracing the full spectrum of capitalist dynamics. Because of this, former board members claim safety is becoming even less of a priority within the company
In an interview aired last week, Helen Toner claimed that Altman routinely lied and withheld information from the board, particularly regarding safety processes. She mentioned that the board was unaware of ChatGPT’s release in November 2022 and only found out through Twitter.
