Once Upon a Time Open-AI Was an Open-Source & Nonprofit

And Elon Mask was part of the company but that’s no longer the case.

For someone who says that artificial intelligence is a great risk to humanity it would only be fair for them to be questioned on why they’d help build a company that represents things he doesn’t stand for, and Elon Mask answered;

“OpenAI was created as an open source non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all.” Said Elon Mask.

According to him that’s why the company is named “Open”AI at least for as long as it was a non-profit. Following that thought today the name might not make sense anymore.

The non-profit OpenAI was founded back in 2015 with focus in digital intelligence and the intention to benefit us all to serve as a counterweight to Google, and even though the company still claims to have the same purpose, in 2019 the company changed tracks from the non-profit we all loved and barely new existed into a “capped-profit” company everyone knows today thanks to ChatGPT.
