Images are an integral part of the web, and there are various image formats that are used to display them. The most common image formats used on the internet are JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and SVG. The formats have advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which one to use depends on the specific requirements of the image.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used image format on the internet. It is a lossy image format, which means that some of the image data is lost during compression. However, the loss of data is not noticeable to the human eye and the resulting file size is much smaller than the original image.

This makes JPEG ideal for displaying photographs and other images with many colors and gradations. JPEG images have the file extension .jpg or .jpeg.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is another popular image format on the internet. PNG is a lossless image format, which means that no data is lost during compression. This makes it ideal for images with a lot of text or images with transparent backgrounds. PNG images have the file extension .png.

Gifs (Graphics Interchange Format)

Graphics Interchange Format is mainly used for animated images. It is a lossless image format, which means that no data is lost during compression. GIF images can also be used to create simple animations by displaying a series of images in succession. GIF images have the file extension .gif.
